Hi, I'm Holly
I learned early that when the financial side of a business goes unmanaged, it doesn't stay in the office. By twelve, I was doing my father's tax returns, not as a fun exercise but because someone had to, and that experience gave me a clear-eyed understanding of what's actually at stake when a business's finances get away from the person running it. It doesn't just threaten the business. It ripples outward into families and into the people closest to the owner. I've never forgotten that, and it's the reason I do this work.
For a long time, though, I wasn't sure what that work would look like. I thought I'd become an English teacher until I realized that spending every day with a classroom of teenagers might genuinely test my sanity, so I moved through a wide mix of jobs and industries instead: teaching horseback riding, retail, running a cash office, visual merchandising, barista work, coaching gymnastics, managing a liquid nitrogen ice cream shop, and catering. I was not in a hurry to land somewhere specific, and I'm glad I wasn't.
My first real encounter with QuickBooks came in 2011, using a 1990s version of the software as a point-of-sale and inventory tool for a gymnastics pro shop. In December 2016, a friend of a friend called to ask if I knew QuickBooks. I said yes, confident I could learn whatever I didn't already know on the job (I'm an autodidact by nature, and a stubborn one). Once I got the rhythm of that office, I dug into the software's back end, took accounting classes, and found I genuinely loved making the numbers make sense.
From there I joined a midsize accounting firm and built out their bookkeeping department, then moved briefly into internal accounting for a software company before taking the leap into business ownership. I founded Accrual Mistress in December 2020, and my first official client was the firm I had just left. Since then I've worked with more than a hundred businesses across a wide range of industries, helped countless new QuickBooks users find their footing, and started teaching for the Sacramento Women's Business Development Center so that practical financial knowledge stays accessible to any business owner who wants it. A lot of that teaching has moved onto YouTube as well, where I publish free, practical content on bookkeeping, QuickBooks, and understanding your financial reports.
When I'm not wrangling books, I'm usually geeking out over my own personal finances: tracking investments, planning for retirement, and subjecting my stepkids to regular reminders about the power of starting young. That means helping them open high-yield savings accounts, walking them through how to read a pay stub for accuracy, and making sure they understand why starting retirement contributions early makes a real difference later. Outside of the numbers, you'll find me reading (I read constantly, and yes, I keep a running list of books completed), hiking, biking, knitting, puzzling, or spending time with my husband and Pippin, our dog, who has claimed the space under my desk as his personal office and makes fairly regular guest appearances on client calls, webinars, and YouTube videos.
